If your excited about driving, Los Angeles is not the place to go.
You'll get into that lovely rental car only to drive at roughly 20 miles an hour. And that's on the freeways. During the morning and late afternoons you'll be lucky to even get 20 miles hour.
I hate to burst your bubble, but the only bad thing about LA is the traffic.
